About Ente Veedu, My Home: Malayalees in Singapore

The Indian Heritage Centre's sixth special exhibition and third community so-curated exhibition celebrate the Singapore Malayalee community. The tangible and intangible aspects of the rich history and heritage of the Malayalees will be showcased through a display of artefacts and stories, along with a variety programmes offered in collaboration with the community. 

We have two weekends of activities for families and free lobby activities for kids! Here's what to expect: 

Our Workshops:

Pookalam Workshop

Date & Time: 26th Nov | 2pm - 4pm

Venue: Indian Heritage Centre

Fee: $10

PROGRAMME SYNOPSIS:                                                      Explore the rich tradition of Pookalam, a vibrant floral arrangement that holds deep cultural significance in Malayalee communities. Learn the significance of Pookalam and create your own using vibrant, colorful flowers!

PROGRAMMING HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Introduce participants to the history and significance of Pookalam 
  • Explanation on the essential materials and tools needed for creating a Pookalam
  • Promote an appreciation for the art of Pookalam and its role in celebrations and festivals

Shadow Puppet Workshop

PROGRAMME SYNOPSIS:

Shadow puppertry workshops are a fanastic way to explore the intersection of art, storytelling, and theatre in a unique and striking medium. Learn how to design and construct shadow puppet, considering materials, size, and details to create characters for your stories. Participants will each bring home your own unique creation!

PROGRAMMING HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Introduction to the history of Thoolpavakuthu in Kerala's culture
  • Provide hands-on guidance and demostrations on puppet design and contruction
  • Foster an appreciation for the art of Thoolpavakuthu and its role in storytelling and performances

The Thoolpavakuthu Puppet Making Workshop Offers a unique opportunity to delve into the world of Kerala's traditional puppetry. Whether you are a beginner or have some experience, this workshop will enable you to create your own Thoolpakakuthu puppets and appreciate the beauty and storytelling capabilities of this ancident art form. Join us in preserving and celebrating the rich cultural heritage of Thoolpavakuthu through the creation of these exquisite puppets. This workshop is not suitable for younger children

Co-curated by the Indian Heritage Centre and members of Singapore’s Malayalee community,Ente Veedu, My Home: Malayalees in Singapore offers a fascinating glimpse into the rich history and heritage of the Malayalees – the second largest sub-group within Singapore’s Indian population.

Embark on a captivating journey through four zones, where you will uncover the roots of the Malayalees and their dedication to preserving their cultural heritage, forging a distinctive identity and fostering a sense of home and belonging in Singapore.

 

Kathakali Workshop, Performance and Face-painting by Bhaskar's Arts Academy

PROGRAMME SYNOPSIS:

Discover the ancient art of Kathakali, a vibrant South Indian dance form, with Bhaskar's Arts Academy. Kids will be enchanted by this unique opportunity to learn the basics of kathakali, including intricate steps, expressive hand gestures and mesmerizing eye movements.

A free Kathakali performance will follow the workshop, allowing the children to witness the magic of this traditional art form. In addition, children will have the chance to participate in a free kathakali face painting activity at IHC's lobby.

This workshop is open to all children aged 5 years and above. Children aged below 7 are to be accompanied by adult.

WORKSHOP CANCELLATION:

If the workshop has to be cancelled due to unforeseen reasons, participants will be informed via email (a few days before the workshop) and SMS (2 hours before the workshop). Participants will receive full refund in case of workshop cancellation via Peatix.
