Little India Heritage Trail – Street Corner Heritage Galleries Edition

The distinctive Little India precinct melds the old with the new, hosting trades from the past beside modern businesses, old conserved shophouses next to high rise buildings. In this precinct, you can find flower garland vendors next to restaurants serving both traditional and fusion meals, small traditional businesses along multi-storey departmental stores. These are just some ways in which the precinct retains aspects of its history within today’s modern context. As part of Singapore HeritageFest 2022, join us on this new edition of the Little India Heritage Trail which also features the Street Corner Heritage Galleries featuring various heritage businesses in the precinct. Listen to anecdotal stories of first- and second-generation heritage business owners and trace the evolution journey of this vibrant cultural precinct.

Title: Making Singapore Shophouses
Shophouses in Singapore were built mostly around the late 19th century and different styles of conserved shophouses are found in the ethnic enclaves and business districts of Chinatown, Little India, and Arab Street. Shophouses in Singapore have become synonymous with local architecture and have become tourist attractions that tell stories of our country's rich multicultural and architectural heritage. As part of Singapore HeritageFest 2022, join us in this talk-cum workshop where participants will learn about the history and heritage of shophouses in Singapore and get to construct their very own Lego shophouse.

IHC Mementos (SHF edition) Visitors to IHC will get to create their own miniature versions of two iconic shophouses found in Little India – The former House of Tan Teng Niah and Little India Arcade. Made available in the form of folding kits, visitors can follow the guided instructions on the kit to assemble these two shophouses.
Visitors can pick-up limited-edition postcards at IHC featuring various trades that were once found in Little India during the 1960s, A total of 6 designs will be released over the month. These postcards are designed by James Suresh and Syed Ismail, with the illustrations and write-ups adapted from their picture book Singapore in the 60s.

Discovering Little Indias of Singapore
Did you know that there used to be multiple Little Indias (areas of Indian settlements) in Singapore in the past? As part of Singapore HeritageFest, guest speaker Lakshmanan Subbiah will share about the Little Indias of Singapore. He will provide an overview of the various Indian settlements that have existed in Singapore and will narrate in detail about the first Indian settlements in Singapore along Market Street and Tanjong Pagar.
